What are AW additives?

What are AW Additives?

AW (Anti-wear) additives are specially formulated chemical compounds added to lubricants, such as oils and greases, to reduce friction, minimize wear, and protect moving parts of machinery. By forming a protective film on the surface of the metal components, anti-wear additives help enhance the performance, reliability, and lifespan of machinery and equipment.

Features of AW Additives

Wear reduction: AW additives are specifically designed to reduce wear on moving parts during contact, decreasing the potential for metal-to-metal damage.

Improved performance: AW additives enhance the lubricant's ability to protect machinery and equipment, leading to improved efficiency and performance.

Extended equipment life: By reducing wear between moving parts, these additives contribute to a longer lifespan of machinery and equipment, ultimately reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

Compatibility: AW additives are formulated to be compatible with a wide range of base oils and thickeners typically used in lubricants.

Types of AW Additives

There are several types of anti-wear additives commonly used in lubricants:

Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs): One of the most widely used anti-wear additives, ZDDPs protect metal surfaces by forming a sacrificial chemically bonded film.

Tricresyl phosphates (TCPs): These phosphate ester additives are used in various applications, particularly as anti-wear additives for gear oils and hydraulic oils.

Phosphorothionates: Included in some lubricating oil formulations, these AW additives help protect against scuffing and wear by forming protective surface layers through chemical reactions.

How is AW Additive Made?

The production of AW additives involves chemical synthesis processes where precursor substances are combined and reacted under controlled conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and time. Depending on the specific type of additive, different raw materials, catalysts, and process steps may be involved. After synthesis, the additives are checked for their quality, performance, and compatibility, then blended with base oils or thickeners to create the final lubricant product.

Applications of AW Additives

Anti-wear additives find use in various applications in which lubricants are needed to protect machinery and equipment:

Automotive sector: AW additives are commonly added to motor oils, transmission fluids, and gear oils to enhance wear protection and extend the life of internal combustion engines and drivetrain components.

Industrial sector: In hydraulic systems, gearboxes, and various machinery, anti-wear additives are used to protect machinery components from wear during high-pressure or high-load situations.

Marine sector: AW additives play an essential role in marine lubricants for engine systems, gearbox systems, and operating equipment, ensuring reliable performance in harsh marine environments.

AW Additives for Sale

Numerous manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors offer AW additives for sale, either as standalone additives or included in various lubricant formulations. Some reputable manufacturers in the industry include Chevron Oronite, Lubrizol, Afton Chemical, Infineum, UNPChemicals and Evonik. Prices may depend on the specific type of additive, its performance characteristics, and the volume of the purchase.

When choosing a suitable AW additive, it's important to consider the specific application and equipment requirements to ensure compatibility and effective wear protection. Additionally, consider selecting additives from reputable manufacturers with a proven track record for high-quality, reliable, and consistent products.
